Google Voice Adds Option to Filter Restricted or Anonymous Callers

google voice groups 650x413 Google Voice Adds Option to Filter Restricted or Anonymous Callers

The Google Voice team announced today that they had created two new groups to help you deal with anonymous or restricted callers. The first group is your main group of contacts that you can set up and let run probably the same way you are today. The second group though, is where all of the fun happens. This would be the Anonymous Callers group.

Since there are still people in this world that choose to hide their numbers when calling, you now have an option to battle them back. Through the Anonymous Callers group, you could say, set up a special voicemail that pops up after 1 ring and reads, "Yeah, your restricted number isn't fooling anyone, broseph. Rethink your spam, Bahamas trip scam strategy and hit me up when you leave 1997." See the power of this? Oh how I love me some Google Voice.

Galaxy Nexus Accessories Now Available Through Google Play Store

accessories google play 650x315 Galaxy Nexus Accessories Now Available Through Google Play Store

Google announced this afternoon that they are going to sell more than just devices in the Google Play store. That's right, accessories will also be a part of the deal. For those that own a GSM or HSPA+ Galaxy Nexus, you can pick up the HDMI portrait desktop dock (our review), the landscape pogo dock (our review), or the 3-pin car mount for fairly reasonable prices. We have seen the pogo dock through Samsung being sold for as much as $90, yet Google is willing to go as low as $54.

You'll notice at all of the product pages that these are likely not compatibile with the LTE Galaxy Nexus. Sorry, folks.

Google+ Local, now being served with Zagat reviews

Google+ is going local with Zagat, the restaurant ratings and review company Google acquired back in September 2011. Starting today, Google is rolling out an update to it's Google+ web front, which adds a local tab to help users discover venues based on their Zagat score and recommendations from people you trust on Google+.

In addition to the new Google+ hub, Google is updating the Maps application to add a similar tab, which will give you a map view of restaurants and locales around you, complete with Zagat score and reviews from experts and people you know on Google+. In the updated Google Maps for Android, you'll now find a local button on the bottom row of your home screen, and once you click through to the Local tab, you'll be presented with a Places-like menu with Restaurants, Cafes, and other Venues. Once you click one of the buttons or search for a type of food, you'll be presented with a list of places complete with the newly-integrated Zagat information.

Android users will start seeing the update for Google Maps shortly, and the new Zagat-integrated features will show up the next time you launch Google Maps after the update. More integrations between the two companies are expected to launch over the next several months.

Who out there is excited for Zagat integration into Google Maps/Places? Or could you care less about Zagat's reviews being in Google Maps/Google+?

Samsung Galaxy S III official Canadian launch pegged for June 20th starting at $159

Samsung's response to the newly freed One series of devices is already available in many parts of the globe and while those of us in the U.S. are still just grasping at rumors, our neighbors to the north can now lord their certainty over us as Samsung has confirmed that the Galaxy S III will be available there starting June 20th.

If that date sounds familiar it's probably because that is the same date that is currently being tossed around for a U.S. launch on T-Mobile, but this isn't about the U.S. so I'll stop stealing your limelight, Canada.

It should come as a surprise to no one that the quad-core Exynos has been dropped in favor of the dual-core 1.5 GHz Snapdragon S4 processor. If that stings a bit then perhaps the full 2GB of RAM (whether you need it or not) will pep you back up.

The LTE version (SGH-i747) will be available on Bell Mobility, Rogers Wireless, SaskTel, TELUS and Virgin Mobile. Those of you on Mobilicity, Wind or Videotron will be getting the HSPA+ 42 variant (SGH-iT999).

The rest of the specs match up with what we saw at the launch event in London so you can go back and check them out here or hit the "show press release" button at the end of the post. The only other discrepancy is that there is no sign of a 64GB version, but with a microSD slot available I doubt that should be too much of a concern.

For pricing the only one to have officially weighed in so far is TELUS and they will be offering the 16GB for $159.99 and the 32GB for $209.99 both on 3-year contracts. No word on what it'll cost you if you don't want to do that kind of time, but if I remember correctly it was about $400 more to go with a 2-year on the Galaxy S II when it launched on TELUS so it's safe to assume it'll cost you.

In the face off between the One X and the Galaxy S III you seemed to generally favor the One X. Has anyone changed their mind since then or is HTC's latest still the top dog this time around?

AT&T HTC One X bootloader unlocked with simple hex code modification

Officially, the AT&T HTC One X bootloader can't be unlocked due to certain restrictions, but that has not stopped the development community from devising a solution of their own. XDA member grankin01 has released a simple solution which allows the bootloader on the AT&T HTC One X to be unlocked by spoofing one of the phone's internal identification codes which makes the phone and HTC's bootloader unlock tool think that it is a Rogers HTC One XL.

The twelve step process is fairly simple, but you will need a hex editor, a little ADB knowledge and a rooted HTC One X. After the code changes are made on the AT&T HTC One X, you will then be able to use HTC's bootloader unlock tool found on htcdev.com.

Now that the bootloader on the AT&T One X can be unlocked, it's only a matter of time before the HTC One X development community releases countless tweaks and custom ROMs for the phone. Do any of you plan to unlock the bootloader on the AT&T HTC One X and make some tweaks to your phone or will you stick to the stock HTC Sense 4.0 experience for a little longer?

BlackBerry Messenger Not Coming to Android After All, Not Sure Anyone Cares Anymore

bbm black BlackBerry Messenger Not Coming to Android After All, Not Sure Anyone Cares Anymore

According to a report out of the Wall Street Journal, RIM is no longer looking to license its BlackBerry Messenger client to other platforms and will instead focus on creating additional features for it while pushing BlackBerry 10 and new devices. This move comes as somewhat of a shocker to many, as purported pictures of the service running on Android devices have appeared a couple of times now. There have also been countless rumors over the last year which suggested that RIM may try to leverage the popularity of the service to make some money for the company as their sales and market share continue to fall off cliffs.

My thoughts? Who cares. RIM had a chance to port this service over to Android and iOS a couple of years ago when it actually was still popular, but failed to do so. It's just another sign of a company that may no longer be with us in a couple of years – one that has made the wrong move over and over again.

Seriously ask yourself, would you all of a sudden switch your messaging life over to BBM should it launch on Android today? You have lived without it for years now, is it really an app that you need to survive? Had RIM made the move to license it back in 2009 when everyone was migrating from BlackBerry devices over to Android and iPhones, it would have been a big deal. Now, not so much.

Samsung Galaxy S III coming to the US by June 20th?

The Samsung Galaxy S III goes on sale in Europe next week, but when is the device coming to the US? David Beren of TmoNews just posted T-Mobile's device roadmap for the next couple months and his sources say the device could launch as soon as June 20th.

Release dates are always subject to change, but it's a good sign that the device could be scheduled to hit our shores less than a month after the international version. Last year with the Galaxy S II, some US carriers did not launch the device until six months later.

We are still waiting to learn which US carriers will carry the Galaxy S III, but rumors and speculation suggest it will be coming to the AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon, and possibly a couple regional carriers as well.

Additional rumored T-Mobile release dates include:

  • Samsung Galaxy S III 16GB Metallic Blue – June 20th
  • Samsung Galaxy S III 32GB Metallic Blue – June 20th

verizon 4g lte logo1 650x460 Verizon: Updates to Add Global Capabilities to the RAZR, RAZR MAXX, Rezound and DROID 4 Coming This Summer

We first reported this news on Friday, but Verizon has confirmed today that the DROID RAZR, RAZR MAXX, HTC Rezound, and DROID 4 will all receive updates this summer to bring them global roaming capabilities. After the update is released, all 4 of these devices will have voice service in more than 220 countries and data in more than 205:

This summer, Verizon Wireless will be updating the following 4G LTE smartphones for global use.

HTC Rezound

Customers will see a notification on their device when the software update is available for their device. After the software update, customers will be able to take their smartphone overseas and use voice service in more than 220 countries and receive data in more than 205 countries.

No time frame other than "summer" was given, but with Ice Cream Sandwich updates on the way to all of the devices listed, we wouldn't be surprised if it was included with them. Plus, now that stores have been asked to print new display lists that reference these new global features, it can't be long.

For those not familiar, "Test Drive" is a way for users of Amazon's store to check out apps before purchasing them to see if they indeed would like to purchase them. Schemer: Google’s Least Known App Looks to Help You Accomplish Big Things

schemerbanner Schemer: Google's Least Known App Looks to Help You Accomplish Big Things

If you search apps made by Google on the Play Store you'll get some pretty big hits: Gmail, Google Search, Maps and Youtube are all prominently displayed on the front page. Second page brings you apps like Google+, Play Music and Google Voice which are all still part of Google's large portfolio of well-used apps. If you head over to the last page you'll see an app named "Schemer" buried in with the barely installed apps that Google has made. You would never know it unless you looked, but Schemer is Google's attempt to get you up off the couch and living your dreams. Google even looks to be putting as much time into it as they are on Google+.

So what exactly is this mustachioed app hidden in the back pages of Google's portfolio? Think of Pintrest, Foursquare and Google+ all rolled into one service designed to help you find things to do, and then do them. "Whatever schemes strike your fancy, collect them on Schemer and then take them with you using our mobile app."

0 Schemer: Google's Least Known App Looks to Help You Accomplish Big Things

Schemer links directly with your Google+ profile and integrates tightly with your circles and your friends who have you in a circle. Whenever you put a scheme up your sleeve, all of your friends can see it, and can consequently add it to theirs as well. Once you have some schemes, the app monitors where you are, what time it is and if there is anything close that can help you achieve that scheme and lets you know where and how to do it.

schemerapp 650x573 Schemer: Google's Least Known App Looks to Help You Accomplish Big Things

While the app seems to be a little barebones now, it definitely has the polish that you expect from Google on their applications. Finding and exploring things to do is easy to do through the app. There are only a few drawbacks to the overall experience. Most of the time, schemes are created without any explanation. So say I wanted to "Hike to the Hollywood Sign," there might not be any information on where or how to actually do that, leaving you with a goal and no instructions. But this can be fixed with more people and more interaction between schemes.

NTT Docomo exemplifies everything I hate about carriers and manufacturers

Set aside the differences in sharing things like photos and videos. Set aside the differences in how the app store and media purchases work. Hell, you can even set aside the differences in cost, hardware design and software design in general. And you'd still be left with the biggest problem Android faces over platforms like iOS today: manufacturers are still releasing too many damn phones. It's what affects a company's ability to provide timely updates, what keeps accessory manufacturers from supporting more devices and what makes Android look like the the dumb-phone OS of the future.

Japan's NTT Docomo has announced their latest lineup of devices in the "Next" and "With" series to be sold this summer; both feature a handful of Android devices. Actually, handful isn't quite right. Maybe truck load. Or landfill. In total, NTT Docomo detailed 17 different Android devices. 16 phones and one tablet. There's devices from Fujitsu, Panasonic, LG, Sharp, Toshiba, Sony and Samsung.

Now before I go any further, I want to make it known that I believe a certain level of choice is a good thing. But there can be too much of a good thing. Verizon has been guilty of it in the past. The biggest manufacturers in the world, like Motorola, HTC and Samsung, are all guilty of it. But what Docomo has done with their summer lineup of devices just blows my mind.

Are case makers stumbling around, trying to get several different designs made up for each of the 16 phones announced? Has Docomo sat down with all the manufacturers who are providing handsets to discuss how and when the next updates will be delivered to those handsets? Do popular Japanese app developers plan to run out and buy 16 new phones this summer to ensure app compatibility?

It seems to me that NTT Docomo is treating Android like the dumb-phone OS of the future. In the past, carriers like Docomo and Verizon here in the US would release dump loads of dumb-phones, all with the same OS, but slightly different variations. Some with bigger screens, some with physical keyboards, some with good cameras, etc. Those handsets were never updated to get rid of any bugs that made it through the pre-release process, cases were hard to come by, there was no such thing as accessories like stereo docks (even for the special music phones of the day). With the way phones were released, quality was an issue. There was never enough time spent on each device throughout the development process.

RIM was the first company to change the cycle by releasing a couple different models of BlackBerrys a year, all of them the same all around the world. Sidekick was also a part of the trend, and so was Motorola (at least for awhile) with the release of the RAZR. Apple has carried the torch and taken it even further by releasing only one device a year. Someone like Docomo is not only going against a trend that actually makes sense for consumers, they're actually destroying progress.

Bottom line: Releasing too many phones hurts app compatibility. It hurts the update process. Handset quality suffers, and in turn, so do consumers.

Carriers and manufacturers, feel free to provide a rich portfolio of Android smartphones. Don't feel bad trying different things. But for the love of all that is good with the little green guy, don't do what Docomo has done. Just stop it.

The Galaxy S III is one of the largest Android product launches of the year so we wanted to talk about the Galaxy brand and what it represents to consumers.

We also chatted about TouchWiz, unlocked phones, and customer loyalty programs, so check out the full interview below and let Samsung know how much you appreciate them taking the time to sit down and talk with the Android community.

Android 4 quietly rolling out to international Galaxy Note

The international Galaxy S II has already received the update to Android 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich, leaving the sized-up Galaxy Note behind on Android 2.3. Today, several European users are reporting that their devices have received an OTA update notification that brings their phone-tablet hybrid into 2012 with the Android 4.0 update.

Of course, this is a Samsung device, and Samsung has revamped their Touchwiz UI overlay for the Note, which looks a lot more like its Gingerbread variant. Other features in the upgrade include a new and improved S Note application, a new S Memo widget, and the Premium Suite Shape Match and My Story applications. Of course, you'll get the performance improvements that come with ICS as well.

Owners of the AT&T-branded Galaxy Note will have to wait for the update to pass through carrier testing, which tends to add 1-3 months to the process. Hopefully that process has already begun, and AT&T Note owners will be getting their own taste of Ice Cream Sandwich very soon. We're leaning towards the update coming sooner than later, as an AT&T-branded Galaxy Note was spotted at CTIA this week.

Any non-US readers out there getting the Android 4 update on your Galaxy Note?

Seraku Shows Off Smart Mirror That’s Android Infused, Let’s Hope It Doesn’t Take Pictures of Our Bedhead

androidmirror Seraku Shows Off Smart Mirror That's Android Infused, Let's Hope It Doesn't Take Pictures of Our Bedhead

A company named Seraku showed off a mirror recently, that through a series of hookups, connects to an Android tablet and then projects an interface onto the reflective surface of the mirror. Plus, so you don't smudge up the nice clean glass with your greasy hands, the mirror uses RF proximity sensors to react to your touch without needing to contact the glass.

The display can show weather, sports scores, and even the temperature and force of the faucet that it's working above. It looks pretty nifty and would be a great way to start the day if you are constantly plugged in. Seraku says the product isn't near being commercially ready yet, but when it gets closer, they see them as being useful for news reading in hair salons and barbershops. There are much more fun applications of this that people can probably think of, so let's hope we see them around in more places as soon as possible.

Verizon’s Galaxy SIII Appears in Benchmark, Looks Again Like a Snapdragon S4

verizon sgs3 650x480 Verizon's Galaxy SIII Appears in Benchmark, Looks Again Like a Snapdragon S4

A device by the model number SCH-I535, which has been rumored to be tied to Verizon's Samsung Galaxy SIII, appeared in a Nenmark benchmark last night. Nothing in the benchmark itself should surprise you, but if it's the real deal, it confirms that Big Red's version will not rock out with a quad-core Exynos processor and will instead use Qualcomm's dual-core and LTE-friendly Snapdragon S4. The "Adreno 225″ GPU and CPU info of 1.5GHz are the clues here.

Other than that, we can see that it runs Android 4.0.4, has a 720p HD resolution, and says "Verizon" as the carrier.

Still no word on a release, but June popped up as a potential timeframe for the U.S. carriers during Samsung's unveiling of the device.

Samsung Sticks with PenTile on the Galaxy SIII to Increase Life Span of Display

Our frustrations with the Pentile matrix on mobile phone screens have been well documented here at DL. When we heard that the Galaxy SIII was not getting the bump up to the Super AMOLED Plus screen, and they chose to instead stick to the screen that used Pentile we were a little confused. Samsung has spoken on the issue however and said it was because the Pentile increases the life of your display's screen.

Even though the Galaxy SII and the Galaxy Note have AMOLED Plus

Turntable.fm App Released for Android, DJ Your Own Station and Share Music

Users of Turntable.fm can let out shrieks of joy today, as an Android application for the music sharing site has gone live in the Play Store. For those new to Turntable.fm (I am a total noob), rooms are created with up to 5 DJ's. DJ's have the power to choose which music is played and the songs can be either liked or lamed by listeners. If a song reaches a certain amount of lames, the song is skipped.

Google and Sony announce new Google TV box

Google TV is almost an afterthought at this point. The service lacks a real differentiating feature to make it a must-have item in your entertainment center, and at least one of Google's partners decided to stop making set top Google TV boxes because they feel the software is premature. Still, companies such as LG are getting into the game recently, and yesterday Google partnered with Sony to unveil a new Google TV set top box.

This isn't Sony's first entrant into the Google TV series; the Japanese conglomerate was an early Google TV advocate, selling TVs with integrated Google TV service since the time the service launched. The next version of Sony Google TV will be special. Not so much for the Google TV service, but for the dual-sided remote control that will be included.

The Remote

The dual-sided remote features the customary TV remote controls on one side, and doubles as a full QWERTY keyboard when flipped over. The result is around the same size as a remote control, as opposed to the full keyboard sized remote on the original Logitech Revue, and the awkward controller on Sony's original TVs.

The Box

The box is unsurprisingly less interesting, what with it being a big black box and all. The video above shows the box in action, though we're told the unit was non-working at the demonstration. The box and included remote are set to be released sometime this summer, so we'll likely be hearing more about it in coming months.

Until then, we'll try to figure out why we actually need a Google TV at all. Meanwhile, you can watch the Google-Sony event in its entirety in the video below.
