Wednesday Poll: Favorite Announcement From Google I/O Day 1?

jelly bean logo Wednesday Poll: Favorite Announcement From Google I/O Day 1?

Now that day 1 of Google I/O has just about wrapped, we would love to hear your thoughts on everything that you saw. What blew you away today? Was it Jelly Bean? The Nexus 7 tablet? Maybe even the drone-line Nexus Q? Will anything ever top the Project Glass demo that Sergey Brin, skydivers, biker riders, and wall scaling maniacs put on? There was a lot to take in, hopefully you were able to follow along during our coverage.

Let us know what has you most excited!

Google+ lands official tablet app and events with Google calendar support

Did you really think we'd get through a Google event without seeing what's new with Google+? Google is always touting the numbers and services behind its social network whenever they get the chance, and today at I/O is no different.

It seems like the network was just launching yesterday, but tomorrow, Google+ will be one year old. So how has it fared over the past year? According to Google, not too bad. Here's how the numbers break down:

  • So far, 250 million people have signed up for Google+.
  • Of those 250 million, 150 million sign on at least once a month.
  • Of those 150 million, 75 sign in at least once a day.

Those numbers are poised to go up, thanks to a little help from the new Google+ tablet app.

Available on Android today, the Google+ tablet app looks great. It's fast, it's fluid and it puts content from your stream front and center. For those of you not using an Android tablet, an iPad version of the app is coming out soon.

Also announced today, Google+ will be adding support for events that integrate with your Google calendar. By using a before, during and after mode, Google+ events will help keep photos and information organized surrounding the event. For example, during the event time, Google+ will ask if you'd like to share any photos taken to the event page. And afterwards, you'll be reminded to share and tag pictures.

Google+ events will be available to the public sometime in the near future.

Before we get into an unboxing and a more in-depth look of Jelly Bean (Android 4.1) and the Nexus 7, we thought we would share the new boot animation that comes with it. We already showed you the new Easter egg, so tossing this out there as well just made sense. Ready for this triangular fun?

Most of the Galaxy Nexus devices laying around the Google I/O show floor are already running Jelly Bean (Android 4.1). Tim and I stopped to play with one for a minute and realized that since this is a completely new version with a new name, that it should also have a new Easter egg. Sure enough, it does. Check it out.

Android 4.1, Jelly Bean, is now official and will become available in July. The first devices to receive it will be the Galaxy Nexus, Nexus S, and XOOM, if you aren't counting the Nexus 7 (our hands-on) which is already running it. After announcing it today at Google I/O, the Android team has posted the platform highlights, so that we can get a refresher of all of the new features.

Nexus 7 full details outed early Update: Now official and available for pre-order

Apparently Google forgot to lock up the Nexus 7 area in the Google Play Store this morning and Modaco went ahead and let themselves in.

We've had some images and rumored details leaked already, but this is pretty much every last nugget of information you could be looking for regarding the Nexus 7. Hit the image at the bottom of the post for the full page image, but here are the highlights.

The Nexus 7 will come in 8 and 16 GB versions, no pricing is shown here so the assumption stands that it will be $199 and $249 respectively.

The Nexus 7 will come with a $25 credit for the Play store for a limited time only along with some content including the movie Transformers: Dark Side of the Moon, the Bourne Dominion book and some magazines.

The full specs rundown is as follows:

  • 7-inch 1280×800 IPS display with Corning glass
  • 198.5x120x10.45mm
  • 12 ounces
  • 1.2 MP front-facing camera
  • WiFi 802.11

Jelly Bean: Google Now, Project Butter, enhanced notifications and more

Google has officially announced and detailed Jelly Bean, Android 4.1. And it's better than we could have possibly imagined. There's a ton of technical changes and new features that will keep Android ahead of the curve. Let's take a look at what the update will include.

Jelly Bean will be smoother than any other Android version before it thanks to Project Butter. By using "triple buffered graphics," Jelly Bean will feature faster and more consistent frame rates, creating a visually pleasing experience. Google used a super high speed camera to film animations on a stock Ice Cream Sandwich and stock Jelly Bean device. The difference was night and day.

Android already has the best notification system in mobile today. With Jelly Bean, it's going to get even better. Notifications are going to be expandable and

Nexus Q is the world’s first social streaming media player

Alongside Jelly Bean and the Nexus 7, Google has unveiled an interesting piece of new hardware called the Nexus Q.

The Nexus Q is a cloud connected jukebox. It works as a sort of receiver for Google Play connected devices, allowing anyone with access to Google Music or YouTube, as just two examples, to play music or videos on whatever the Nexus Q is hooked up to.

If you have your Nexus Q hooked up to a set a speakers (like the $399 pair being sold on Google Play), anyone who connects their device to that Nexus Q can play music through those speakers. No need to pass around phones or connect to different accounts.

As far as the tech specs, the Nexus Q features optical audio, an ethernet port, micro HDMI port, micro USB and banana jack speaker outputs, all wrapped in a solid black ball shaped casing, surrounded by a ring of 32 color changing LED lights.

The Nexus Q will be available in mid-July for $299. For more information on the Nexus Q, check out the dedicated web page for the Q here.

Galaxy Nexus HSPA+ goes down to $349 on Google Play

If you've been waiting to pick up a T-Mobile and AT&T compatible GSM Galaxy Nexus from Google Play, today's your lucky today. Along with putting the Nexus 7 and Nexus Q up for preorder, Google has knocked the price of the unlocked HSPA+ compatible Galaxy Nexus down to just $349.

We've certainly had our say on the Galaxy Nexus here at Android and Me. Some good, and some bad. But no matter how you slice it, $349 for one of the best Android devices money can buy is an absolute steal. That's incredibly close to what you'd pay for some Android devices on-contract. And for the one that's guaranteed to get Jelly Bean first, well, like I said, it's an absolute steal.

I've been very happy with my Galaxy Nexus. So what are you waiting for? Is the Galaxy S III still tempting you? Perhaps you still have you eye on the One X? Let us know in the comments below.

Rumor: HTC already working on quad-core Qualcomm S4 powered flagship device

The HTC One X may be old news now that the Samsung Galaxy S III is making its way across the globe, but that doesn't mean HTC is simply going to sit back and accept defeat. The latest rumor would have us believe that a new HTC flagship device is already in the works which will eclipse Samsung's current offering.

According to an anonymous source, HTC is working on a new device which is powered by a 1.6 quad-core Qualcomm S4 SoC (possibly the APQ8064) with 2GB of RAM, LTE integration, 4.7-inch 720p display, 8 megapixel rear camera and a 1.8 megapixel front-facing shooter. The majority of the specs line up with the current HTC One X, but the quad-core Qualcomm S4 chip could easily make this new HTC device one of the most sought-after handsets later this year.

Unfortunately, there's an issue which throws the credibility of the anonymous source into question. The source claims the device will feature and Adreno 350 GPU while Qualcomm's documents claims that the APQ8064 is paired with the Adreno 320. We suspect there's a typo in there somewhere, but we suggest you digest this news with a grain of salt.

What are your thoughts on the new HTC rumor? Would you be willing to pass on the Samsung Galaxy S III if HTC has plans to release a quad-core Qualcomm S4 powered handset in the next 3-4 months?

Google lists HSPA+ Galaxy Nexus as the first to get Android 4.1 Jelly Bean

Did Google just out the HSPA+ Galaxy Nexus as the first device to get Jelly Bean (which is apparently coming "soon"), confirm that it will indeed by Android 4.1 (not 5.0) and give us a small, blurry look at what to expect with the next major update? Yes, yes and it looks like yes.

jell bean nexus 300x94 Google lists HSPA+ Galaxy Nexus as the first to get Android 4.1 Jelly BeanThanks to the checkout page for the HSPA+ Galaxy Nexus sold on Google Play, we now know that the next major release of Android, Jelly Bean, will be 4.1.

First spotted by an XDA member, I was not able to recreate the screenshot showing Jelly Bean in association with Android 4.1. But Kellex of DroidLife has been able to confirm that when purchasing the Galaxy Nexus through his account, the final confirmation page lists the device as, "the latest smartphone from Google, soon the first phone with Android 4.1 Jell…"

I was able to view a new icon for the Galaxy Nexus showing a modified Google search bar (the same one featured in the listing for the I/O 2012 app), assumed to be a part of Jelly Bean, lending even more credibility the the accuracy of today's discovery.

At this point, we had already assumed that Jelly Bean would end up being Android 4.1, and that the HSPA+ Galaxy Nexus would be the first device to receive the update. If anything, this is just a little bit of confirmation that we were thinking in the right direction.

Will we see Android 4.1, Jelly Bean unveiled at Google I/O next week? I think we can confidently say yes. As for when the update will actually reach HSPA+ handsets, "soon" could mean anything. Could be during the announcement, could be a month from now. Verizon and Sprint users, who knows how long it could take for your device to finally get the update. Hopefully it won't be another six months like last time, but I wouldn't be surprised to see the wait extend into the 4th quarter of the year. Either way, we should know more in just a couple more days now.

SwiftKey 3: out of beta, into awesome

I've spent a healthy amount of time with just about every software keyboard imaginable. From dozens of alternatives on Android (some as good as Swype, and some as different as 8pen), to other operating systems like Windows Phone and iOS. And none of them come close to my absolute favorite, SwiftKey. Why bring this up now? Because SwiftKey 3 has just come out of it's beta phase, and is available now on Google Play and the Amazon Appstore, where it's half off for a limited time.

If you haven't used SwiftKey in the past, the keyboard's main selling point is that it not only predicts the text you're currently typing, but what will come next. SwiftKey learns your typing habits from your Facebook, Gmail, Twitter, RSS and text messages to provide customized suggestions.

A lot of work has gone into making SwiftKey the best version yet. It's faster, more refined, has a handful of new customization options and boasts a long list of new features, including several suggestions from users who were involved in the SwiftKey 3 beta:

  • Smart Space – adding to SwiftKey's already cutting edge correction, Smart Space detects mistyped or omitted spaces across strings of sloppily typed words in real-time.
  • Two new themes – a new theme, 'Cobalt', to match SwiftKey's new look and feel, and an Ice Cream Sandwich-styled 'Holo' theme, as voted for by you.
  • An enhanced UI – a much larger space bar and smart punctuation key help improve accuracy and make it quick and easy to access common punctuation.
  • Additional languages – SwiftKey 3 now offers support for an additional seven languages, bringing the total up to 42. The new languages are Korean, Estonian, Farsi, Icelandic, Latvian, Lithuanian and Serbian.
  • A dedicated comma key, and the 123 key in the bottom-left corner.
  • A refined Smart Punctuation pop-up for better, more consistent behavior.
  • An improved Smart Space functionality for easier email addresses and URL entry.
  • Reduced lag on some devices for a more responsive experience.
  • A reintroduction of the long-press duration setting by popular request.
  • Further improved prediction algorithms for even more accurate next word suggestions.
  • Refined gestures for a smoother experience.

To try SwiftKey 3 for yourself, head on over to either Google Play or the Amazon Appstore (where the discount is not available yet) where you can buy it now for just $1.99.

Once you give it a shot, be sure to let us know what you think in the comments below.

Droid RAZR and RAZR Maxx getting Android 4 starting today

Motorola has announced that Android 4.0 will be rolling out to the Droid RAZR and Droid RAZR Maxx handsets starting today. Android 4.0 brings a slew of upgrades to the RAZR line, including a revamped home screen and lock screen, home screen folders, face unlock, and camera enhancements. Best of all, possibly due to the merger with Google, Motorola's UI has been seriously lightened up, several Moto widgets have been removed, and the update looks much more like stock Android 4.0 than don'tcallmeBLUR.

The update should be coming to your device over the next few weeks. It's possible you may be able to force the upgrade today or tomorrow by manually checking for it by going to settings, about phone, then system updates, though this methodology has been hit or miss with other devices.

Regardless, the very long wait for Ice Cream Sandwich is nearly over, and owners of Motorola's best Android phones to date will be ushered into the latest and greatest Android OS just in time for the unveiling of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean next week.

Flipboard drops beta tag, adds Google+ and YouTube support

Flipboard for Android was previously available as a public beta, but has now ditched the beta tag and released onto the Google Play Store. In light of it's full release, Flipboard for Android has added new features, most notably support for Google+ and YouTube, meaning you can get those feeds directly in your Flipboard stream in addition to the customary Facebook, Twitter, RSS, and other feeds.

As we'd expect, the final release allows you to share stories with all your installed services, and also adds localized editions for Germany, Korea, Italy, Spain and The Netherlands. This brings the total number of localized editions to 12, as Flipboard had previously supported the United States, UK, Canada, China, Japan, France and Australia. Also added is the option to go full screen, ditching the menu bar in favor of added screen real estate.

Flipboard is one application that's always installed on my phone, and I highly recommend you give it a download as well. Flipboard is now available for free on the Google Play Store, and you can easily download using the app bar below. Let us know what you think of Flipboard in the comments.

Those of you that have been around Android since the beginning will likely remember the Android Developer Challenges. They were app development contests sponsored by Google back in the early days when Android did not exactly have a bountiful supply of apps. Well one of the finalists in the second of those contests was Door 6 with their 3D space flight game Atmosphere: Trainer which they later refined into the tunnel racer Vacuum which is still available in Google Play and I will personally attest can be highly addictive.

Well the guys at Door 6 have continued to work in a similar vein since then and are now ready to take the wraps off their latest creation which they are calling simply "Atmo."

Qualcomm butter benchmark proves Snapdragon S4 is “coolest kid on the block”

It's no secret that the Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 is the processor most sought-after by smartphone makers this year. Qualcomm has managed to cram some impressive performance numbers and LTE connectivity into the 28nm chip, making it one of the most efficient chips on the market.

One added benefit of the Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 is the chip's amazing heat efficiency. In order to show the difference between the heat expelled by the S4 chip and that of its competitors, Qualcomm could have simply taken thermal images of various devices while performing CPU intensive tasks. Instead, Qualcomm took a few sticks of butter and placed them on top of a few phones to see which device melts butter the slowest.

We're not sure if Qualcomm is playing favorites in its butter benchmark test, but if you have a few spare phones running on different processors, you could

Verizon unveils Share Everything plans, available June 28th

Shared data plans will soon be a reality, if you happen to be a Verizon Wireless customer. Verizon has finally officially unveiled their shared data plans, set for a June 28th availability date. Verizon's new Share Everything plans will give each plan an unlimited amount of data and texts, with fees increasing with the amount of data you need to get through the month. When pricing a data plan, customers will be presented with the following two-step process:

Step 1: Select 1 smartphone and up to 9 other devices

  • Smartphone: $40 per month
  • Basic/Feature phone: $30 per month
  • Jetpacks/Notebooks/Netbooks/USB hotspots: $20 per month
  • Tablets: $10 per month

Step 2: Select the amount of data you need

  • 1GB: $50 per month
  • 2GB: $60 per month
  • 4GB: $70 per month
  • 6GB: $80 per month
  • 8GB: $90 per month
  • 10GB: $100 per month

Once you've made selections, simply add your fees together to come up with your monthly bill. For example, a two smartphone plus one tablet plan at 4GB of monthly data would be $160 per month ($40 for each smartphone, $10 for the tablet, and $70 for 4GB of shared data). All smartphones and tablets on the plan will feature the hotspot functionality at no additional charge, so long as you stay below your allotted data threshold.

The resulting prices are generally less than they would be under the current plan structure, generally falling around $10-20 per month cheaper, though the savings are potentially much greater on the high end. A plan with 5 smartphones would be about $340 per month in the old world, and comes in at around $300 for 10GB of data, or a bit less if you need less data.

I for one am looking forward to shared data plans, as they have the potential to save customers lots of money on their monthly bills. With AT&T and other carriers rumored to be working on plans of their own, shared data is likely here to stay.

Unfortunately for my LTE Nexus, I'm currently addicted to the HTC One X and will also have a Galaxy SIII in a couple of weeks to play with, so I'd hate to see it sit on a shelf and collect dust.

Well, what better way to fix that problem than by giving it away to a DL community member? These suckers retail for $54 in the Play store, but with shipping and taxes (depending on where you live), they can run you upwards of $70. How about we save one of you that cash to put towards your next full retail phone?

HTC to Keep Focus on High Quality Devices, CEO Doesn’t Want to “Destroy Brand Image”

htc logo 650x432 HTC to Keep Focus on High Quality Devices, CEO Doesn't Want to

In a recent talk with the Wall Street Journal, HTC's CEO stated that the company will now begin to solely create high-end and mid-range devices moving forward. In a move to not "destroy brand image," it looks like the days of low-end smartphones are over for HTC. Can we expect nothing but One S and One X-esque devices from now on? Until there is further clarification as to what a low-end device is in the eyes of HTC, we'll have to see what he means.

During the launch and success of the One S and One X devices, HTC has shown that they can create a device that everyone wants to own. In addition, with the acquisition of Beats audio, they now also own a good selling point in the software department. With so much work being put into creating the world's greatest device, it isn't a shock that HTC would want to distance themselves from future low-end disappointments. Could this mean VZW customers can expect a high-end HTC option sometime soon? If so, sign me up.

Sony gives fans control over the next Xperia announcement

It might not have the build up of a major press announcement like the Galaxy S III, but Sony is giving something new a go over on their Facebook page by letting fans "fast forward" to the announcement of the next Xperia smartphone.

This started yesterday morning and the announcement was originally scheduled for June 22nd, but every time a user clicks the big orange button the clock jumps ahead (just one turn per day). They've had a pretty solid response so far as a little over 24,000 people have clicked the button and thus brought the announcement up to the afternoon of June 13th as it stands right now.

Now I'm guessing that Sony isn't probably unveiling anything revolutionary here, but they do still owe us one Xperia Ion for AT&T by the end of June. Despite the fans on their Facebook page doing some minor rioting in favor of an Xperia Play 2 I'm pretty sure they would have brought that out at E3 last week if it were that far along.

In case I'm right about this being the Ion, I'll give a quick refresher, as I was pretty impressed with it at CES. The highlights were the 4.65-inch 1280×720 Reality Display which was one of the best looking displays I've seen in terms of contrast and color reproduction. The other big feature was the 12 MP Exmor-R camera which was able to fire off a shot from standby in under 2 seconds. On the downside it was slated to launch with Gingerbread, though we're hoping Sony's wised up and puts Android 4 on this bad boy.

Hit the source link below to do your part to speed up the countdown, if you have a Facebook account that is, and there's also at least one contest for a free Xperia phone that you can get in on while you are at it.

The Ion is just my theory, any other Xperia phones that you've been waiting for?

Update: So much for my prognostications. The phone they revealed was the Xperia Miro which is a decidedly low end device with a 3.5-inch screen at 320×480, an 800 MHz processor, 5MP camera, but hey at least it's running Ice Cream Sandwich.

While it wasn't this specific announcement Sony did let slip that a version of the Xperia Ion will be available sans LTE internationally, so maybe that's what had my spider sense tingling.

My Xbox Live lands on Android

Ever since Microsoft's My Xbox Live app first arrived on iOS, I was dying to get my hands on a version of the app for Android. Today, the good folks from Redmond have made that dream come true.

The launch of the Android version of the My Xbox Live app is bittersweet. While it is nice to see the app finally hit Google Play, it's missing some key functionality.

My Xbox Live for Android looks amazing. It's smooth and intuitive. It just lacks some of the most important features the app has to offer on other platforms, like the ability to tether your device to your Xbox

Android App Updates: NOVA Launcher, Adobe Flash, Adobe AIR, Facebook, Tumblr and Total Commander

android app updates 650x432 Android App Updates: NOVA Launcher, Adobe Flash, Adobe AIR, Facebook, Tumblr and Total Commander

When Friday rolls around each week, we tend to see a bunch of app updates hit the Play store as teams finish up projects before heading into the weekend. This week is no exception, as new releases of Facebook, Tumblr, Adobe Flash and AIR, Total Commander, and Nova Launcher all showed up within the last 24 hours. Most of them were released to squash bugs, but with apps like Nova and Tumblr, we get some new goodies to talk about.

Galaxy S III pre-orders live on Sprint, AT&T and Verizon

The Samsung Galaxy S III is shaping up to be the most uniform non-iPhone launch across U.S. carriers in recent memory and certainly in Android history with all four major carriers releasing identical hardware (AT&T's odd Verizon-red option notwithstanding) within just weeks of one another.

In keeping with this lock step launch plan we had three of the four put their versions of the Galaxy S III up for pre-order in the last 24 hours with Sprint, AT&T and Verizon all ready to take your money. While the hardware is virtually identical there are a couple minor differences depending on the carrier that you may want to pay attention to if you are shopping for a carrier as well as the phone. It's also worth noting that the price on contract is the same across all three, but if you want to pick the Galaxy S III up off contract it'll cost you extra on Verizon as their retail price for the 16GB is $599 versus the $549 that Sprint and AT&T are asking.

Sprint was the first to throw their hat in the ring with pre-orders going live yesterday afternoon. Sprint's claim to fame with their Galaxy S III will be having Google Wallet installed and operational when you receive it. It does of course also support Sprint's LTE network, so if you are in one of the six locations that will have it soon or if you just want to future proof yourself that's a nice touch. Sprint is vowing to do their "best to get it to you before others get a glimpse on Thursday, June 21."

AT&T got into the act this morning and you can pre-order the white or blue models at the moment, but if you have your sights on that exclusive red version you'll just need to wait as apparently it's still fermenting. The AT&T model does support their whole host of network options so you can enjoy whatever is fastest in your area be it "4G" or 4G. If you are a crazed digital hoarder you may be a little upset by AT&T's lack of a 32GB Galaxy S III, but with the microSD slot it shouldn't be a problem for 99% of you. AT&T is going to try to just edge out Sprint by shipping on June 18th.

Bringing up the rear is the Verizon pre-order. Why do I put it that way you ask? Well yesterday's rumor proved true and they are planning to ship "by July 9th" which for those keeping track at home puts them over two weeks behind everyone else. Does that wording leave a flicker of hope that it will ship earlier? Sure it does, but I wouldn't hold your breath.

Moving on there is some positive news for potential Galaxy S III owners on Big Red and that is that global roaming will be enabled on the phone in the future with a software update. Verizon's incredibly dominant LTE coverage map isn't of course unique to the Galaxy S III, but it seemed worth mentioning when comparing the three.

That's all the current Galaxy S III pre-order news that's fit to print type at the moment, but US Cellular will be getting in on the pre-order act on June 12th with a ship date sometime in July and while T-Mobile isn't doing the pre-order thing for now, they do share Sprint's June 21st release date.

Have you already gotten your pre-order in and what carrier did you go with if you did?

Google’s upcoming 3D maps are stunning

Google Earth has always been impressive. The amount of time and resources it takes to create an accurate, interactive map of the globe is far beyond the grasp of most companies. But Google has taken the challenge head-on. With the new 3D maps Google has revealed at their maps event today, they'll be taking that challenge to the next level.

Created by using entirely automated technology, Google's new 3D maps are breathtaking. By using a fleet of planes, Google has been able to capture aerial images at a 45-degree angle, from several different angles, autonomously lacing them together to paint an accurate 3D model of the world around you.

While it wasn't revealed exactly when Google's new 3D mapping technology would be made available to the public, it should be coming soon. Whether or not 3D mapping will come to Google maps, and not just Google Earth, is still unclear. From what we've gathered, it will be available in Google Earth only, at least initially. Whenever Google Earth with enhanced 3D drops, look for it on both Android and iOS.

What do you think of Google's new 3D maps? Just a gimmick, hardly worth its own press event, or will it change the way we interact with maps from this point forward?

Google is Regaining Control of Android, Not Losing Control [Opinion]

There has been a lot of speculation surrounding Google's purchase of Motorola and the rumor that Google will partner with five manufacturers for the Nexus project. There seem to be signs that things are changing around the way Google controls Android. Google needs the phone manufacturers and the carriers to ensure that handsets get into consumers' hands, but the tug of war between OS vendor, OEM, and carrier hasn't been pretty.

DROID RAZR HD Stops by Nenamark for a Benchmark, Snapdragon S4 Processor on Board

The DROID RAZR HD appears to have stopped by Nenamark within the last few days to pop off a benchmark and give us a look at its specs. From this result, we can see that it indeed does have a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 dual-core processor clocked at 1.5GHz. How can we tell? Because of the Qualcomm Adreno 225 GPU listed here that accompanies this chipset.
