Hisense and Samsung tune in to Google TV

Google TV has struggled to gain adoption in consumer's living rooms, but it's one of my favorite Android powered platforms and I believe it still has huge potential left. VIZIO recently started selling the $99 Co-Star and this week Hisense and Samsung both announced they would offer Google TV products later this year.

The Hisense Pulse is a small Google TV box, very similar to the Co-Star in design. It features the same

According to a newly leaked image from Engadget, Samsung's Galaxy Stellar is expected to launch September 6 for the price of $99. As you may have gathered from earlier posts, the Stellar is Sammy's budget offering for folks looking to take advantage of VZW's 4G LTE, but still have money left over in their wallet. The Stellar is powered by a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, runs Ice Cream Sandwich, and has a 3.2MP back-facing camera for your snapshot needs.

Funny enough, HTC pokes that they are working with Verizon to get the software out to users as soon as possible.

Sorry Thunderbolt owners. We'll keep you posted.

Qualcomm explains the system of tiers for Snapdragon S4

Last year Qualcomm reorganized how it named its Snapdragon processors and divided them up into different series. Snapdragon S1 represented the first-gen chip found in the HTC Nexus One, then we had S2 and S3, followed by S4 that is currently featured in almost every 4G LTE phone in North America.

For awhile this made things simple as we could just reference the series of chip instead of having to call out the exact model number like MSM8960. When Android fans hear "Snapdragon S4″ they think of the super fast chip that is found in the HTC One X and Samsung Galaxy S III, but there are actually four different tiers of S4 and they are not all created equal.

A perfect example is the Snapdragon S4 Play, featured in the new HTC Desire X. One could see the "S4″ and think they were getting Qualcomm's latest 28nm Krait CPU and faster Adreno GPU, but this budget chip uses the older 45nm process technology and slower Cortex-A5 CPU and Adreno 203 GPU.

If our numbers are correct, there are currently 15

Android Recovery [Opinion]

20120825 073251 Android Recovery [Opinion]

Android used to be the go to option for OEMs fleeing Windows Mobile in search of relevancy in the mobile space, but lately it seems that unless you're Samsung or Apple you simply cannot make money in mobile. Samsung has been the only Android manufacturer to consistently make money quarter after quarter for the past year. Motorola's profits plummeted quarter after quarter until Google bought the entire company. HTC has managed to sell a sizable number of devices, but has fallen from being the top Android manufacturer to an equal of LG and Sony. While no Android OEMs pay Google to use Android, most pay Microsoft licensing fees. What is making Samsung successful while other OEMs continue to struggle?

T-Mobile breaks $100 off-contract mark with Concord

T-Mobile's reputation as one of the most affordable carriers in the nation is being reinforced today with the arrival of the T-Mobile Concord, a rebranded ZTE device that goes for under $100 off-contract.

The T-Mobile Concord may not be the best spec'd device on the market, but that's not its claim to fame. Coming in at a meager $99.99 (with a qualifying Monthly4G plan at Target), or $99.98 (with a Walmart Family Mobile no annual contract plan), the Concord is a 3.5-inch 3G device with a 2-megapixel camera and Android 2.3 Gingerbread.

I know it's probably hard for the enthusiasts in the crowd to get excited over a device like the Concord, but for a first-time smartphone buyer (or someone who just wants access to apps like Facebook, Google Maps and Gmail), you can't beat a perfectly capable device for under $100 with no annual commitments. I think it might be time for a couple people I know to ditch the flip phone and move up in the world.

Facebook employees forced to use Android so they’ll see how bad app really is

While the iOS version of Facebook may have gotten a much improved native app today, Android users are still stuck with an abomination of an app. There are constant complaints over just how terrible the Android app is, and what's worse, Facebook knows it. So just how do they plan on fixing it? By forcing employees to eat their own dog food.

There's an old term used in the tech-sector known as "dogfooding." In the software business, it applies to the employees of a company using their own products to examine the user experience. According to Business Insider, who has talked with "a handful of ex-Facebookers and others familiar with Facebook's plans," that's exactly what Facebook is doing in order to improve their Android app.

Facebook employees are being pushed, or forced in some situations, to use Android devices simply because the Android app is terrible. Facebook figures that if developers have to use the Android app, they'll realize just how bad it really is and work to make something they themselves would want to use. This is absolutely brilliant.

If having to experience how atrociously slow and error-prone the Facebook Android app is day in and day out doesn't force Facebook employees to come up with something better, I can't imagine what will.

It's not the 4G LTE enabled version, and probably never will be since those upgrades ended months ago. But no matter what, $199 for a 32GB dual-core tablet is still a pretty good deal. While I would recommend that you skip these every single day of the week and buy a Nexus 7, some of you may prefer the larger 10″ screen (and in this cases 10x heavier) size.

The device itself has been "factory recertified."

HTC Thunderbolt ROM shows off official Android 4.0 build

The HTC Thunderbolt has been the buggiest handset released by HTC in the last year and a half. The handset was updated from Froyo to Gingerbread, but many doubted it would see an official Ice Cream Sandwich update after HTC decided to scratch the HTC Desire HD from the list.

HTC to reduce handset prices to better compete with Samsung and Apple

A Chinese industry supply chain source claims that HTC is looking to reduce the prices on its upcoming lineup of Android and Windows Phone 8 powered devices. HTC has struggled to keep up with Samsung and Apple and compete directly on features, and the company believes that reducing the price point of upcoming handsets may give the company a competitive edge which could help recapture market share and increase revenue.

It's not exactly clear if HTC will be doing anything on the hardware side to keep the cost of their phones down, but the source claims that HTC will be dropping Beats Audio technology from the mix. While HTC does own a 25 percent share of Beats Audio and has exclusive rights to use their technology in mobile devices, HTC is most likely paying a small licensing fee for every device with the technology enabled.

A more competitive HTC is something we would all like to see, as long as new devices don't skimp on build quality and internal components. We're not sure how much cheaper HTC phones will actually be once they arrive in stores, but consumers are always looking for the best value for their hard-earned dollar.

How much of a price cut will HTC need to offer to gain back some market share from Apple and Samsung?

Unlock your bootloader with Motorola’s Unlock My Device

After what feels like years of waiting, Motorola has launched "Unlock My Device," a legitimate way for Motorola brand Android users to unlock the bootloader of their device, allowing for the installation of third-party software.

In order to easily flash custom ROMs or other similar third-party software to your Android device, one of the first steps you have to take is unlocking your bootloader. Motorola is notorious for making that next to impossible. Different hacking methods have been introduced for unlocking Motorola bootloaders in the past, but they should all be unnecessary now. Motorola promised that they'd provide a relatively simple bootloader unlocking solution, and today, they've done just that.

By installing the Android SDK, some Motorola drivers and following a handful of directions, Motorola's Unlock My Device service will unlock the bootloader of your device.

Checking the list of supported devices right now returns an error page. So unfortunately, we don't know what devices will be able to be unlocked using Unlock My Device. We'll be keeping a close eye on the service as more information is made available. Keep your fingers crossed that Verizon's big list of Droid devices make the cut.

OnLive not shutting down, but massive layoffs reported

Taiwan Central Bank proposes HTC bailout to help company and stabilize Taiwan’s economy

With stiff competition from Apple and Samsung, HTC has posted some less than stellar numbers the past few quarters. The company is still profitable, but its decline in sales and revenue have contributed significantly to Taiwan's five months of decline in exports which saw a drop in July of 11.6% from a year earlier.

In an effort to get HTC and the country back on track, the president of Taiwan Central Bank has urged the local government to step in. According to some sources, an unnamed official claims that the Taiwan's Ministry of Economic Affairs is already working on a plan to help HTC.

While HTC been struggling to keep up with the record breaking numbers it posted last year, we're not sure that the company really needs assistance from the government of Taiwan – at least not yet. HTC is still a dominant force the Android world, second only to Samsung. An HTC bailout may force the company to pull back on risky or innovative ideas which may actually help the company regain some market share and help them live up to the "quietly brilliant" tag line that they are so proud of.

So is HTC at a point where a bailout is the only option to get the company into a position where it can be competitive and regain market share?

Best Android tablets for gaming

If you consider yourself a mobile gamer, I bet the thought of owning an Android tablet has crossed your mind. Playing games on your phone can be fun, but some titles just scream for a larger display. The first wave of Android tablets were too expensive and didn't live up to expectations, but the latest generation of devices is starting to make people think they might need a companion device for their smartphone.

There are countless Android phones to choose from, but the selection of Android tablets is more limited. You can still enjoy a great gaming experience on tablets at every price point, but the number of quality products is limited to a few OEMs. Check out our top picks for every budget.

Google’s Benefit Plan Includes “Death Benefits” – Die and Your Family Will be Taken Care of for Years

google logo 650x403 Google's Benefit Plan Includes

This may not be directly Android-related, but I found it interesting enough to share with those of you that may not have seen it. A report out of Forbes, talks about a special perk that you qualify for if you work at Google – death benefits. Chief People Officer Laszlo Bock talked about how they may "sound ridiculous" and that there is "no benefit to Google," but that is not the point. During death, families experience one of the harshest times of their lives and Google wants to help the families of their employees deal with it.

So what are the "death benefits" that you get as a Google employee? Well first off, there doesn't seem to be a tenure requirement, so that means almost all of their employees should qualify. Should you pass on though, during your time as an employee, Google will pay 50% of your salary for 10 years to your family. Your stocks will also be vested immediately and each of your children (assuming you have some) will receive $1,000 per month until they are 19 (or 23 if going to school full-time).

Bock talked about statistics that show improving employee performance when you have incredible benefits packages, however, they offer death benefits "simply because it's the right thing to do."

Props, Google.

Rumor: Motorola Releasing DROID RAZR HD and RAZR MAXX HD in October?

droid razr hd11 650x366 Rumor: Motorola Releasing DROID RAZR HD and RAZR MAXX HD in October?

According to a rumor out of a site called Hot Hardware, a "very reliable source" has indicated to them that Motorola is going to release both a DROID RAZR HD and a RAZR MAXX HD, but not until October. Their source was not able to confirm any specs, but Motorola employees have done a marvelous job of providing us with those through image hosting and benchmark sites. The FCC filing for the phone gave us some goods too, like the 2530mAh battery it will hold. This person with knowledge of the situation also mentioned that the launch could depend on how many regular RAZR and RAZR MAXX devices they sell leading into the fall season. That seems a bit odd, especially since that build is almost a year old, which is an eternity in the Android game.

CyanogenMod 9 stable ready for release

Announced today on the official CM blog, Android 4.0 based CyanogenMod 9 stable builds will be released for a handful of devices tonight.

For months now, developers from all over the world have been joining forces, working together towards a mass release of CyanogenMod 9. Some two and a half months after the first release candidate made its way to 37 different devices, stable builds of the stock Android based alternative software are finally ready. For developers and users alike, the release of CyanogenMod 9 is bittersweet.

While it's great to see team CyanogenMod's hard work finally come to fruition, CM9 is practically dead on arrival. The release of CyanogenMod 9 marks the end of development for the ROM. From here on out, devs will be devoting their time to CyanogenMod 10, based on the newly released Android 4.1, Jelly Bean.

As far as why the developers behind the ROM would even finish CyanogenMod 9 at all, they simply didn't want to leave things incomplete.

If for some reason you can't find a daily-driver worthy Jelly Bean ROM, or just prefer to stick to stable releases, CyanogenMod 9 will be available from get.cm later tonight. The CyanogenMod 9.0.0 release for the GSM Galaxy Nexus from earlier today was a mistake, and the correct release will be available tonight as well.

While the underlying version of Android may be the same, some of the new features and bug fixes are slightly different since the two devices run on a completely different chip.

The update for the Tegra 3 One X features improvements to HTC Sense, memory management, updated browser with a dedicated tab switching button, menu button remapping to the recent apps button, enhancements to Beats Audio and other system stability tweaks. Developers will now have access to SDK enhancements for better Media Link integration and improved video calling capabilities for third-party applications.

Why it's hot: The Nexus brand represents an up-to-date, pure Google experience. The original HTC Nexus One was launched back on January 5th, 2010 and it has spawned two more Nexus phones.

Which OEM will make it?: Old rumors from Digitimes reported that Samsung would build the 4th-gen Nexus phone, and then a newer story from the Wall St. Journal said Google was working with multiple OEMs on releasing several Nexus devices. A lot of details are still unknown, which will lead to increased attention and buzz in the coming months.

Expected US carriers: AT&T and T-Mobile for the unlocked phones. It's possible we could see a carrier locked version on Sprint or Verizon, but the unlocked model will be more desirable.

Samsung Galaxy Note, new myTouch lineup available now on T-Mobile

T-Mobile has officially released its three latest smartphones for purchase today. The Samsung Galaxy Note, new myTouch, and new myTouch Q are available online now for $249 and $49 respectively.

With the release of the Samsung Galaxy Note II right around the corner, T-Mobile has just released the original Galaxy Note for $249 on a new two-year contract, $599 without. The device might be a hard sale for tech news junkies, but the device still offers plenty of shelf appeal for the less-informed.

Save for the T-Mobile branding near the speaker of the device, Magenta's Note hasn't undergone any major changes. There's a 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon processor, 1GB of RAM, 8 megapixel camera, 5.3-inch S Pen compatible display and of course, access to T-Mobile's "4G" network.

The Huawei manufactured myTouch and myTouch Q (for Qwerty keyboard) have also gone on sale today for $49 with a two-year contract, or $349 without. Both devices feature a 1.4GHz single-core processor, 5 megapixel camera, 4-inch WVGA display and Genius Search powered by Nuance.

A year ago, a device like the new myTouch would have been a good deal. But in the age of $349 unlocked Galaxy Nexus, it's hard to imagine it taking off.

I have a feeling I already know the answer, but do either of the myTouch devices or the T-Mobile Galaxy Note interest you? Let us know if you plan on picking up either device in the comments below.
